Aloha Warrior Families,

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break!  We are back and ready for the final stretch of the school year!  I cannot believe there are only a few months left before our Warriors are on their way to fifth grade.  But before that happens…we have much to accomplish! So, remember, attendance is key!

We come back from break and our Warriors will be taking the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (state testing) in a few weeks.  We have practiced sample questions and the students have responded very well.  Their enthusiasm and excitement shows every day as we review concepts, skills, and test taking strategies. Our test dates for our class are on: 5/15, 5/17, 5/22, and 5/24.

If you ever have a question or need to reach me, please email at jbess@powayusd.com or stop on by (my door is always open).

Mahalo,

Science & Social Studies

Continue to read nightly at home for 30 minutes and discuss the story with your child.  Conversations about the stories being read is imperative in your child's development.  Last, but not least, have fun with it!

Ideas to discuss:

- Character traits, character development (how characters change from the beginning to the end of the story)

- The meaning during figurative language usage

- Opinion-based questions (e.g., how do you feel if..., would you..., do you agree...)

- Different perspectives from the character/s point of view

- The main idea and the details that support it

The Warriors did a great job presenting their information on the Great Debate! They used relevant information, explained their thinking, and used sources to back them up! The Warriors walked away victorious!

We are in full swing in our informational reports! Please remind your Warrior to have at least two sources printed out (or have books) ready in order to spend time in class writing.

At home, continue to practice their multiplication facts and make math fun! When you go to a store, have your child figure out the costs and change. When you go to a restaurant, have your child figure out how much to tip based off of fractions! Math is all around us!

We are exploring the California Gold Rush! Students will learn about what life was like during the Gold Rush as well the impact that the Gold Rush had on California and the people.
